LGBT-Inclusive Sex Education Means Healthier Youth and Safer Schools. (n.d.). Retrieved November 29, 2015, from https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/lgbt/news/2013/06/21/67411/lgbt-inclusive-sex-education-means-healthier-youth-and-safer-schools/

This article talks about how sex education schools will now include LGBTQ. They will discuss gender identity and sexual orientation to give every youth a better understanding of the differences of the subject. Not teaching youths about LGBTQ automatically places people who are part of the LGBTQ community in a place as a minority and target for bullying because of differences. It aims to teach that homosexuality and differences in gender identity are acceptable and normal in society. Not talking about them in school shows that they are not normal and not worthy of including again making them a target for harassment and bullying.

I thought this article was extremely interesting and something that i never thought about involving the LGBTQ subject. Talking about this group early to youths during sex education will make more people be accepting of this and help them to live healthier lifestyles emotionally and physically. Educating others who aren't part of the LGBTQ community about them at a young age may help prevent them from looking down upon this group and maybe stop the bullying and exclusion of this group.

This was the 2011 National Climate Survey executive summary and showed staggering numbers on the experience of LGBTQ in school. The survey showed that 63.5% felt unsafe because of their sexual orientation. 81.9% were verbally harassed because of their sexual orientation or gender expression. 38% were physically harrassed and 18% physically assaulted. Feeling unsafe at school cause many of the people in the LGBTQ community to skip school and many more who don't miss school have severe anxiety effecting their grades, schoolwork and performance in the classroom. Declining perfromance in the classroom and social challenges can have serious emotional effects such as depression. The positives in this survey showed that there is an increasing number of teachers and educators support the LGBTQ community. There have also been an increase in number of curricular resources in which students can access for information on LGBTQ related topics. Lastly there was a large increase in anti harrassment and bullying policies and reports by students.

What this shows is the numbers of people in the LGBTQ community effected by being different or a minority and i was amazed at the number of people who skipped school because they felt unsafe or uncomfortable. I think since 2011 we have made big steps in this country towards more acceptance for the LGBTQ community with the legalization of gay marriage and constant awareness of support for a minority group such as this. The numbers in this survey in my opinion probably have declined since 2011 hopefully giving everyone in the LGBTQ community a better school experience.

This article takes a standpoint from the perspective of the teachers and administrators in the school. The aim to improve the school experience and performance of LGBTQ students. When they interact with these students on a daily basis they need to build a good relationship with them and talk about things such as dropping out, substance abuse and thoughts of suicide . these are big problems among the LGBTQ community who cope with negative experiences in this way. The administrators also try to figure out ways to accelerate positive effects on learning and talk with them about life goals and aspirations. Another challenge that the educators are trying to face is how to fulfill the goals of equality for all students.

I think this is great seeing that the teachers and administrators are the leaders of the school they have the power to dictate change if they want. I also think this article shows how much awareness is being raised in the school systems for the LGBTQ students and that the teachers are getting involved to help. Figuring out better ways to help these students on an academic but also personal level is important and this article says they are moving in a positive direction to accomplish this goal.

This article focuses on the topic of College bound students who are in the LGBTQ community. When they apply for colleges they look for ones that especially accepting and open of this group. they also look for colleges that have resources and support to help this group of students. Sometimes LGBTQ students are discriminated against when applying to college or even some jobs. Sometimes even after high school these students still face challenges when trying to get into college continuing their negative school experiences.

I think that if a student has the grades and credentials and qualifies to get into a certain school they should be able to get in. As far as resources and colleges open to the LGBTQ group i feel that recently colleges as well as jobs like to have a very diverse group of students so they may seek out LGBTQ students. I also believe that most colleges have a good support system for these students such as a school psychologist in the guidance department to help these students with their mental well being and support them through their sexual orientation and identities. I'm sure there are groups or clubs where these students can get involved and interact and meet other people like them. If there is no club or group that is part of the school i feel there should be to bring the LGBTQ community closer socially while at school.

The study in this article shows that LGBTQ students are at higher risk for suicidal thoughts, unexcused absences and victimization by peers along with bullying and harassment compared to straight students. The psychological problems are related to each other the bullying and not being able to fit in socially can cause anger and depression which could lead to suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. It also says that being a transgender can effect social experiences because it prevents gender conformity in society. Anxiety and depression was also at higher rate in the LGBTQ community most likely because of their differences and the way other students negatively react to them.

I thought this article was interesting in the sense that it took the psychological aspect of each of the groups of students and studied that. Most articles were focusing on academic performance and sociological experiences but this took a good look on the individual level and showed that being an LGBTQ student can have very negative effects sometimes severe and life threatening. I think going to therapy and having support from family members and friends would be very beneficial to the individual.
